Who’s Next Eligible for the Rock Hall?

In this extension of the Rock Hall snubs series, we are looking at who becomes eligible in the next ten classes – from 2024 through 2033. We have given them odds for eventual induction, though – as you can see from our article series on previously eligible artists – there is quite a waitlist. The odds are slim, low, medium, high, and lock – lock meaning their induction is all but guaranteed.

Previously, artists were eligible for the Hall in the 26th year after their first commercial release. However, as reported by Billboard last year:
“The nominating committee at the Rock Hall has recently started meeting the same year the inductees are honored, as opposed to the year before. This means 2023 is a sort of ‘make-up year’ for artists whose first release was in 1997 or 1998. But in the future, when it comes to Rock Hall nominations, you can subtract 25 from the induction year to determine eligibility.”
So 2023 had two newly eligible classes (1997 and 1998) and only 25 years for a release is needed for an artist to be eligible moving forward.

I hope this list leads you to some new artists or music. I can only include brief information about each one, so if any odds or descriptions peak your interest, check out the artists’ bios and music.

The Next Generation

In the next five years, some solid artists become eligible for the Hall, including thirty-eight that I believe have medium odds or higher of being inducted eventually. The 2028 class is especially stacked, with four artists I believe are eventual locks, plus several other artists with good odds.

We see a lot of post-grunge, hip-hop, and alternative rock artists in this section. While there is currently not much support for recognizing or inducting post-grunge bands, ultimately the genre’s popularity should lead to the Rock Hall reevaluating the artists in this genre, and to recognize that just because post-grunge piggybacked on the popularity of grunge and was more mainstream, it doesn’t mean it’s not good music.

From this 2024 through 2028 range, I recommend John Mayer, Michelle Branch, Sum 41, Breaking Benjamin, Simple Plan, and The Killers.

Eligible 2024

Ariel Pink (real name Ariel Marcus Rosenberg)     Genre(s): Psychedelic, Indie Pop, Indie Rock    Odds of Induction: Slim
Ariel Pink released his first album in 1999. While critically successful and influential with his low-fi, hypnagogic sound, Pink’s controversial, homophobic, and unstable statements – whether trolling or serious – combined with allegations of physical, sexual, and mental abuse toward a former girlfriend and others will keep him out of the Hall.

Coldplay     Genre(s): Alternative Rock, Pop Rock     Odds of Induction: Lock
Coldplay released their first single in 1999. One of the highest-selling artists of all time, and one of the definitive artists of the last 20 years, Coldplay has achieved massive critical and commercial success. The band has also influenced a long list of artists, especially through their first two albums, regarded as two of the best of all time.

Chris Cornell     Genre(s): Grunge, Alternative Metal, Hard Rock     Odds of Induction: Lock
Chris Cornell released his first solo music in 1999. Regarded as one of the greatest rock singers of all time and a noted songwriter, Cornell will be in the Hall someday, possibly with multiple inductions: solo, with Soundgarden, and with Audioslave.

Halestorm     Genre(s): Hard Rock     Odds of Induction: Low
Halestorm released their first EP in 1999. Known for lead singer “Lzzy” Hale’s vocals, the band began to have much more success in the late 2000s, and is now a respected hard rock band. Success starts to build their case for the Hall, but they will need more.

The Hex Girls     Genre(s): Gothic Rock     Odds of Induction: Slim
The Hex Girls – yes, Thorn, Dusk, and Luna from the Scooby Doo universe – (technically) released their first music in 1999 with their appearance in Scooby Doo! and the Witch’s Ghost. Am I joking right now? Yes. But also no. These girls are absolute legends and have inspired young girls (and others) to get into rock music, fashion, Wicca, and environmentalism. Also, watch this “live” performance from Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated featuring Daphne Blake and tell me it couldn’t be a radio hit.

Ludacris released his first album in 1999. One of the most successful rappers of the 2000s, his first seven studio albums are all certified gold, platinum, and multi-platinum. A list of rappers ahead of him will slow his path to the Hall. At least he has twenty more Fast & Furious movies to look forward to.

John Mayer     Genre(s): Pop, Soft Rock, Folk Rock, Blues Rock     Odds of Induction: Lock
John Mayer released his first EP in 1999. Known as one of the best modern guitarists and a pop magnate, Mayer has a strong case for the Hall already. Though some controversial interviews might hurt him a bit, Mayer’s massive success, technical ability, and staying power will see him through to the Hall.

Slipknot     Genre(s): Heavy Metal, Nu-Metal, Alternative Metal     Odds of Induction: Medium
Slipknot released their first music in 1999. One of the most popular metal bands of the 21st century, their first five albums are all certified gold, platinum, or multi-platinum in several countries. Success and musicality help their case, but lyrical themes begetting violence and controversy hurt their case.

Thrice     Genre(s): Post-hardcore, Alternative Rock, Punk Pop, others     Odds of Induction: Low
Thrice released their first EP in 1999. While they have not had major success, the band is known for their genre-shifting and bending musicality, playing with different genres and sounds on their albums. They have also been mildly influential, giving them a decent résumé for the Hall.

Eligible 2025

3 Doors Down released their first music in 2000. Known for hit songs “Kryptonite” and “Here Without You,” the band had a decade of solid charting success, including one gold album, one platinum album, and two multi-platinum albums. With other successful post-grunge bands with more recognition ahead of them, they have a tough road to the Hall.

Ryan Adams     Genre(s): Indie Rock, Alternative Country, others     Odds of Induction: Slim
Ryan Adams released his first solo album in 2000. Noted for his songwriting and genre-switching, and musical respect from many noted artists, Adams will likely not enter the Hall after allegations of sexual harassment and emotional manipulation from multiple women, most of which he accepted and apologized for.

Against Me!     Genre(s): Punk Rock, Alternative Rock     Odds of Induction: Low
Against Me! released their first EP in 2000. Known for songs about transgenderism and LGBTQ+ issues, the band has found solid commercial and critical success. They would add some much-needed representation to the Rock Hall, as frontwoman Laura Jane Grace is a transgender woman. Their critical regard and musicality give them a case for the Hall.

Michelle Branch     Genre(s): Pop Rock, Country     Odds of Induction: Low
Michelle Branch released her first solo album in 2000. She took over pop rock for several years with her multi-platinum sophomore album and a platinum junior effort, along with a hit feature on Santana’s “Game of Love,” for which she won a Grammy. She then co-formed Grammy-nominated The Wreckers. Her critical and commercial success are enough for the Hall, but she is missing influence and other pop-rockers, like Avril Lavigne, are probably ahead of her on the list.

Jeremy Camp     Genre(s): Christian Rock, Contemporary Christian     Odds of Induction: Low
Jeremy Camp released his first album in 2000. While he has not crossed over into mainstream charts much, Camp has dominated Christian charts for two decades and has influenced a number of Christian artists.

Rascal Flatts released their first music in 2000. Known best for crossover hit “Life is A Highway,” the band is probably a lock for the Country Music Hall of Fame. Seven straight platinum or multi-platinum albums and critical success helps their case, but genre hurts their chances with the Rock Hall.

Relient K     Genre(s): Punk Pop, Christian Rock     Odds of Induction: Slim

The heavy metal parody band made up of Jack Black and Kyle Gass has serious musical chops, as evidenced by their popular and critical success – including a Grammy. As a side note, if Jack Black doesn’t get in as a performer as part of this band, he should be inducted in the Ahmet Ertegun or Award for Musical Excellence categories for his contributions to progressing rock music (Tenacious D, School of Rock, High Fidelity, that Sax-A-Boom performance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, etc.).

T.I. (real name Clifford Joseph Harris Jr.)     Genre(s): Hip-Hop     Odds of Induction: Slim

My Chemical Romance     Genre(s): Punk Pop, Alternative Rock, Emo    Odds of Induction: High
My Chemical Romance released music in 2002. Their song “Welcome to the Black Parade’ is already one of the Rock Hall’s Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll. The band should follow it into the Hall with significant critical and popular success to go along with their defining sound.

OK Go     Genre(s): Pop Rock, Alternative Rock, Power Pop     Odds of Induction: Low
OK Go released their first commercial music in 2002. Known and widely-praised for their music videos (I mean, just look at this masterpiece), the band was also a steady presence for alternative rock in the 2000s and 2010s. Their music video innovation and creativity hold most of their case for the Hall.

Seether     Genre(s): Post-Grunge, Hard Rock   Odds of Induction: Low
Seether released their first music in 2002. They have released several gold and platinum albums so far, as well as several hit singles. The band has been one of the defining post-grunge artists and has helped the genre transition from that pejorative label to hard rock. Jet     Genre(s): Garage Rock, Indie Rock     Odds of Induction: Low
Jet released their first music in 2003. Known for their hit “Cold Hard Bitch,” the band has released only one massive album, Get Born, though that album is considered a seminal modern garage rock and indie rock album. It’s difficult to make the Hall with just one great album.

Keane     Genre(s): Alternative Rock     Odds of Induction: Medium
Keane released their first commercial singles in 2003. Known for their subtle to little use of guitars (rare for any sub-genre of rock music), the band’s first three albums are all certified gold, platinum, or multi-platinum in multiple countries. All twenty-seven of their singles have also reached the top five for that chart. Check out their great acoustic cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man.”

Three Days Grace     Genre(s): Hard Rock, Post-Grunge     Odds of Induction: Medium
Three Days Grace released their first music in 2003. Another of the most successful rock acts of the 2000s and 2010s, they held the record for the most number one singles on the mainstream rock chart (15) until Shinedown broke it. The band’s success gives them a decent shot at the Hall.

Velvet Revolver     Genre(s): Hard Rock     Odds of Induction: Slim
Velvet Revolver released their first single in 2003. Known for hits “Slither” and “Fall to Pieces,” the supergroup released one multi-platinum album. Amy Winehouse released her first music in 2003. While she only released two albums before her premature death, she left a significant legacy. Known for her contralto vocals, she influenced many artists. Her album Back to Black is considered one of the greatest albums of all time. Look to see her inducted on her first ballot.

On Their Way

The next few years sees another solid batch of artists become eligible for the Rock Hall, including some of my favorites, with a heavy influx of punk pop, pop rock, and indie rock artists. I gave another nine artists medium odds or better to get in, though many of these artists are far from finished, meaning many can improve their chances for the Hall further.

While punk pop has had its critics, the genre has also seen a lot of critical recognition and commercial success, giving it an edge over maligned genres like nu-metal and post-grunge. Two-thousand thirty has an absolutely stacked class, with four eventual locks (and possibly first-ballot inductees) and other solid artists.

From this batch of artists eligible from 2029 through 2031, I recommend listening to Paramore, Silversun Pickups, Zac Brown Band, Eric Church, and Daughtry– and many of these other great artists.

Eligible 2029

All Time Low     Genre(s): Punk Pop, Alternative Rock     Odds of Induction: Low
All Time Low released their first commercial EP in 2004. A popular punk pop band from the 2000s and 2010s, the band needs help to make the Rock Hall, like other artists citing them as an influence.

Sara Bareilles     Genre(s): Pop, Pop Rock     Odds of Induction: Low
Sara Bareilles released her first album in 2004. Known for her hit “Love Song,” she has released one platinum album and two gold albums. While she needs to do a lot more to make a case for the Rock Hall, she is one of a handful of people with a legitimate chance to become an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) winner.

Bloc Party     Genre(s): Indie Rock, Alternative Rock     Odds of Induction: Low
Bloc Party released their first music in 2004. They have released one gold and two platinum albums so far, among other success. The band has also influenced other artists, such as Paramore. A host of other indie artists stand in front of them for Rock Hall induction, however.

Bring Me the Horizon     Genre(s): Metalcore, Alternative Metal, Alternative Rock     Odds of Induction: Medium
Bring me the Horizon released their first EP in 2004. Known for their “scene” style as much as their music, the band has had solid critical and commercial success and has been influential on rock fashion and with their music. They have a solid case for the Hall down the road.

Eligible 2030

Arctic Monkeys     Genre(s): Indie Rock, Alternative Rock     Odds of Induction: Lock
Arctic Monkeys released their first music in 2005. The face of 2000s and 2010s indie rock alongside the Black Keys, the band has had significant critical and commercial success. They have also influenced a number of artists. Musicality, success, and influence will lead them to the Rock Hall.

The Fray     Genre(s): Pop Rock, Alternative Rock     Odds of Induction: Low
The Fray released their first commercial music in 2005. Known for their emotional lyrics and melodies, they have released one platinum album and one multi-platinum album. The band has been on hiatus since 2016, and will need more than their success and musicality to see the Rock Hall.

The Kooks    Genre(s): Indie Rock, Pop Rock, Indie Pop     Odds of Induction: Low
The Kooks released their first singles in 2005, and have found solid critical and commercial success, though not to the same extent as contemporary Brits Arctic Monkeys. A continuing discography helps their case, but many other bands will have to get in before they would ever be considered (Oasis and Blur for starters).

Macklemore (real name Benjamin Hammond Haggerty) Genre(s): Hip-Hop Odds of Induction: Low
Mackelmore self-released a mix-tape in 2000, but his first true commercial releases came in 2005. Noted for his success with producer and DJ Ryan lewis, he has had significant commercial and critical success, often rapping about liberal social issues. He has released one gold and one multi-platinum album, along with eight mega-hit singles. Despite his success, he so far lacks influence. As well, many other hip-hop artists are more deserving, making his case tougher.

Nipsey Hussle (real name Ermias Asghedom)     Genre(s): Hip-Hop     Odds of Induction: High
Nipsey Hussle released his first mixtape in 2005. One of the most respected rappers among his peers, he actually only released one full studio album before his death. With respect and influence, success, and musicality, he should make the Hall.

Panic! At the Disco     Genre(s): Punk Pop, Pop Rock, Alternative Rock     Odds of Induction: Lock
Panic! At the Disco released their first music in 2005. Eventually lead singer Brendon Urie’s solo project, Panic! released one gold album, three platinum albums, and two multi-platinum albums among massive critical and commercial success. Musicality, technical ability, influence, and success ensure at least Urie a trip to the Rock Hall.

Paramore     Genre(s): Punk Pop, Pop Rock, Alternative Rock, Emo     Odds of Induction: Lock
Paramore released their first music in 2005. Known for lead singer Hayley Williams’ vocals, their live performances, and the band’s shifting sound, their first five studio albums are certified gold, platinum, or multi-platinum. Respect, influence, technical ability, and critical and commercial success have paved the way for Paramore to the Hall.

Portugal. The Man     Genre(s): Alternative Rock, Indie Rock, Indie Pop     Odds of Induction: Low
Portugal. The Man released their first EP in 2005. Known for hit single “Feel It Still,” the band has had mild critical success and has consistently released music. Their output and success start a case for them to make the Rock Hall.

Rihanna (full name Robyn Rihanna Fenty)     Genre(s): Pop, R&B, Hip-Hop     Odds of Induction: Lock
Rihanna released her first music in 2005. A pop icon, she is one of the most successful artists in music history. She has collaborated with many artists in different genres and has influenced many others. Look to see her in the Rock Hall sooner than later.

Silversun Pickups     Genre(s): Alternative Rock, Indie Rock     Odds of Induction: Low
Silversun Pickups released their first EP in 2005. Known for their soft vs. loud sound, guitar layering, and lead singer Brian Auburt’s vocal style, the band has had mild commercial success, but is a respected indie artist. They probably need more for the Hall.

Rob Thomas     Genre(s): Pop Rock, Alternative Rock     Odds of Induction: Low
Rob Thomas released his first solo music in 2005. A noted songwriter, Thomas has found success outside Matchbox Twenty; it’s possible he’ll be inducted twice, though he has more work to do as a solo artist. Success and technical ability help his case here, but he’s more likely to be inducted with Matchbox Twenty only.

Zac Brown Band     Genre(s): Country, Country Rock, others     Odds of Induction: High
Zac Brown Band released their first album in 2005. They released four straight platinum or multi-platinum albums along with critical success. With genre diversity, the band are one of the few country artists that have a legitimate shot at the Rock Hall (the Hall has been pretty stingy about letting in country-related artists since the earlier classes).

Eligible 2031

Camila Genre(s): Latin Pop, Pop Rock     Odds of Induction: Low
Camila released their first music in 2006. The Mexican trio (sometimes duo) have been one of the most popular Spanish language rock groups since their formation. They have several Latin Grammys and have three albums certified platinum or diamond in multiple countries. Unfortunately for their case, the Rock Hall has only ever nominated one Spanish language artist (in 2025), so their chances are slim until the Rock Hall improves its international representation.

Eric Church     Genre(s): Country, Outlaw Country, Country Rock    Odds of Induction: Low
Eric Church released his first music in 2006. A rare country performer with a chance at the Rock Hall, Church takes many of his influences from outlaw country and rock music. He is the most prominent modern outlaw country artist, giving him unique musicality for his time. His first five albums all went platinum or multi-platinum, and he has had solid critical success. He has more work to do in influence if he wants a shot at the Rock Hall, though he is probably a lock for the Country Music Hall of Fame one day.

Daughtry     Genre(s): Post-grunge, Hard Rock, Pop Rock     Odds of Induction: Low
Daughtry released their first music in 2006, coming off of a popular appearance by frontman Chris Daughtry on American Idol. The band has released one multi-platinum, one platinum, and two gold albums so far and helped define 2000s and 2010s post-grunge popular rock music. They need more influence and, outside of Daughtry’s voice, have comparable musicality to similar artists. They have a tough road to get to the Hall.

NEEDTOBREATHE     Genre(s): Alternative Rock, Christian Rock, Country Rock     Odds of Induction: Slim
NEEDTOBREATHE released their first music in 2006. Known for hits “Something Beautiful” and “Brother,” the band has an extensive discography and has had some critical success. Without much influence and musicality, however, they have a slim chance at the Rock Hall.

The Raconteurs     Genre(s): Indie Rock, Alternative Rock, Garage Rock     Odds of Induction: Low
The Raconteurs released their first music in 2006. Known for hit song “Steady as She Goes,” the band is another Jack White-led success. The White Stripes, his most successful endeavor, are likely to be inducted – and that duo overshadows this band, which has had critical and commercial success, but lacks influence and distinct musicality. White could also eventually be inducted as a solo performer or in another award category for his contributions to rock music.

The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus     Genre(s): Punk Pop, alternative Rock, Emo     Odds of Induction: Slim
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus released their first music in 2006. Known for mega-hit “Face Down,” the group has a long list of other more prominent and influential punk pop groups ahead of them in wait for the Rock Hall. “Face Down” could be considered for addition to the Hall’s Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.

Nate Smith     Genre(s): Jazz, others    Odds of Induction: Low
Nate Smith is one of the preeminent modern drummers and played on his first record in 2006. his first solo album was in 2008. Known for intricate, technical, and interesting playing style, he is an influence on many drummers in several genres of music. It’s difficult for an instrumentalist to be inducted as a performer, but perhaps he can be inducted under another award category for his playing and producing.

Taylor Swift     Genre(s): Pop, Pop Rock, Pop Country, Alt Pop, Folk    Odds of Induction: Lock
Taylor Swift released her first music in 2006. One of the biggest artists the world has ever seen, Swift is a virtual lock for the Hall. Her music has spanned several genres and sub-genres, and she has influenced countless contemporary and future artists. There is also plenty of rock in her music and live concerts, for the doubters out there.

You Me At Six     Genre(s): Punk Pop, Alternative Rock     Odds of Induction: Slim
You Me At Six released their first EP in 2006. Known for their extensive discography and touring, the band has been a fixture on punk pop and alternative rock circuits for years. they have a unique sound within their genres, but they need to record influence in order to make it to the Hall.

Down the Line

Here are a few more artists developing a case for the Rock Hall. These artists mostly have more work to do, which makes sense considering they are only 16 or 17 years into their careers. There are ten I have given medium odds or higher (mostly medium) to be inducted to the Rock Hall at this point. I recommend checking out Anarbor and Don Broco, along with many of the others.
